Although Jo Hoffberg calls California her home, she spends most of the year traveling with her dance partner Kevin St. Laurent. She holds 1st place titles from the US Open, Canadian Swing Championships, Camp Hollywood, American Lindy Hop Championships, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, International Lindy Hop Championships, and European Swing Dance Championships. Her first international working experience was in Japan working for Universal Studios, and since then she has taught in the US, Asia, Australia, South America, Western and Eastern Europe. Currently performing with The Killer Dillers, she is thrilled at the idea of new costumes. She is a passionate and avid dancer, instructor and competitor.
Jo is also a notorious movie quoter and inundates her friends and students with her sassy attitude and one liners from Anchorman, Blades of Glory, Wedding Crashers and How I met your Mother, as well as breaking out into song at inappropriate moments. When Jo grows up, she wants to be a secret agent and have language skills, survival skills, knife throwing skills, shorthand skills, costuming skills, and the power to read minds. When she is not learning a new skill, she plots to take over the world! After that accomplishment she’s not entirely sure what she’ll do. Long walks on the beach and cold weather aren’t for her, but she does enjoy wearing boots and drinking cups of hot water.
As an international man of lindy hop, Kevin has been traversing the globe since the new millennium began, spreading the gospel of the golden age of jazz. With his exquisite and provocative partner Jo Hoffberg, he has taught and performed in over 25 countries across 5 continents with an emphasize on the style and inspiration from the 1920’s to the 1940’s. Together they hold titles at a number of fancy events such as the International Lindy Hop Championships, European Swing Dance Championships, American Lindy Hop Championship, Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown, Camp Hollywood and Camp Jitterbug.
With clear and humorous instruction, this creative and versatile dancer will entertain you, inspire you, and help you become the best dancer you can be. Changing the world, one rock step at a time, is a formidable task, but he is definitely up for the challenge.
When not dancing, Kevin can be found taking long motorcycle expeditions, surfing in exotic locations, sailing the blue waters of the Caribbean or just enjoying a whiskey and pipe on the veranda of a late night jazz club. He calls San Francisco home and particularly loves the walking lifestyle that a deep urban habitat affords. Always approachable, easily amused, Kevin strives to live life to it's ridiculous conclusion. Swing Heil!
Laura grew up in a little hick town with more cows than people. It didn’t have much dancing, and the only radio stations were country, rap, and country. However, she was always enchanted by the classical CDs her parents had and danced around the living room constantly. She bumped into Lindy Hop, Swing, and Jazz in San Antonio while at Trinity University. She learned her first swingout from Mike Lenneville and Lani Steffens and, since then,
has been dedicating every spare moment (and dollar) to learning more about this amazing dance. She has taught in Canada, France, Estonia, Australia, New Zealand and throughout the US.
Currently, Laura shares a teaching company, The Lindy Project, with Mike and Scott Angelius, where they teach Lindy, Swing and Blues to the Austin locals. She goes out to dance most nights of the week, and pimps Austin out to whoever will listen (you should definitely come and visit, by the way).
Mike has been dancing Lindy Hop and associated dances including Charleston, East Coast Swing and Blues since 2000. He started teaching locally in 2001 and has been teaching on an international level since 2008. Over the years, Mike has traveled the United States and Europe attending workshops and competitions, honing his craft. Mike now regularly manages the monumental undertaking of being both an international dance instructor and a full time worker. His wife is very impressed with him.
He has established himself as a leader in the Austin Lindy Hop community, teaching and serving on the Austin Swing Syndicate board of directors. He currently co-owns a dance company, The Lindy Project with Laura and Scott Angelius. He strives to create a fun and exciting environment in his classroom and at the Syndicate’s weekly dances. No matter how much technique you have, if you’re not having fun with it, there’s no point.
