Swing Dancing is lots of fun and we're really glad you're interested in trying it! This page is meant as a basic guide to getting started and finding resources on our website.
- To stay in the loop about events and classes, sign up for our newsletter and 'like' our page on Facebook
- For a taste of what we do, try attending our Swingin' Wednesdays. You can try a 30 minute beginner lesson and dance to fantastic DJs for just $3, in a low-pressure hang-out kind of atmosphere. You'll get an idea of how our lessons work, meet people, and see some of our traditions, such as jam circles and The Shim Sham line dance.
- If you like swing dancing and want to learn more, there are lessons nearly every night of the week! And if you want to learn even faster, our instructors are available for private lessons. They're very affordable - just send a note to our Instruction Chair for advice and contact info. Occasionally we offer small workshops and every October we host a really big workshop. These will also be on our calendar.
- If you really get into dancing, it's fun to travel to other cities' events. We sometimes organize official road trips (see the newsletter or Facebook page), but you can also post on our Facebook page (after you 'like' the page) if you want to find other people to go to an event.
Below are some basics about getting started, but there's more on our FAQ Page:
What to wear - you don't need to go out and buy anything special to get started. For now, just wear any comfortable shoes that stay on your feet and don't grip the floor, and comfortable clothes that give your arms (and maybe legs too) good range of motion. If you really get into dancing, you can make or buy some 'real' dance shoes later.
How to learn - Mostly, you've got to get out there and dance! Learning to dance is a combination of study and practice. Group and private lessons plus lots of getting goofy on the dance floor with lots of different people.
